Yes 80 feet in six weeks.
Bamboo tree growth 5 years.
Then in the fifth year an amazing thing happens the tree begins to grow at an astonishing rate.
This grove was started in 1992 and over the next three years had large 5 to 10 gallon size field dug divisions planted.
Finally after five years the bamboo starts growing and in six weeks it grows to over 80 feet tall.
While most trees grow steadily over a period of years the chinese bamboo tree doesn t break through the ground for the first four years.
In fact in a period of just five weeks a chinese bamboo tree can grow to a height of 90 feet.
A 5 year timelapse movie of a tree growing in my backyard.
The chinese bamboo tree grows 80 feet in just six weeks.
The point is simple.
You keep watering and keep waiting.
It is 80 feet in five years.
We live in an amazing time period where we utilize and love over 1400 varieties of bamboo worldwide.
In the second year again no growth above the soil.
The third the fourth still nothing.
The only thing you know is that the result is supposed to come in 4 years.
Each following year under good growing conditions the bamboo planting will grow new shoots which will grow larger and taller.
And what growth it is.
A picture taken every week for 5 years to create this movie.
But then what happens on the fifth year is just awesome.
This may not sound like a lot of growth for three years but at a five year level you should have 20 to 40 culms canes 3 4 inches in diameter and 20 feet high under good growing conditions from a single bamboo planting.
It can take up to 10 years for the bamboo planting to reach full maturity in which the new culms produced for the season will grow to their largest height and diameter.
Our patience is tested and we begin to wonder if our efforts caring water etc will ever be rewarded.
Growing new bamboo plants a new bamboo will take approximately three years to establish but can take upwards of four years to achieve the maximum size of culms dependent on the species climatic conditions soil sun water and health all of which play a big part in bamboo growth as with any other plant.
If you had given up for even the shortest period of time there would be no bamboo.
