Learning how to care for cedar shingles whether they are installed as siding or roofing is not particularly difficult.

When cedar siding is vertical and installed after power washing normally a two day allowance for drying is good to provide previously painted seasoned cleaned cedar wood. Allowing fresh siding to weather for as little as two weeks negatively affects coating adhesion. But over time the elements have taken their toll and the finish is starting to look weathered. Like most wooden shingles however especially when painted they require care and maintenance over the course of time.

Test results from the forest products testing lab run by the usda for the forest service show that after 12 weeks of exposure to sunlight cedar siding has lost half of its ability to hold a film forming coating system like primer and paint. But a little maintenance can keep them looking great and extend their life even further. And as with regular house paint vinyl safe paints come in different finishes. We like to use sherwin williams or porter oil primers. Do not use water borne primers over exposed cedar siding.

After you have washed it wait for it to dry before applying any stain to the cedar. Staining cedar siding differs from application of paint and other finishes. Drying back out after power washing not to be confused with brand new wood from the lumberyard. Step 1 clean.
